25, 50, & 55

After we witnessed the new union of my cousin Henry to his new bride, Josephine, we zipped over to the Yee home to witness their union of 25 years of marriage.
They both don't look they have aged in 25 years! It's those youthful Chinese genes!
Angela got back into her original wedding dress and her and Michael renewed their vows and recommitted their lives to each other continuing to make Jesus the center of their lives.
Can't wait to be at their 50th wedding anniversary!
Their kids were their attendants and it was a very beautiful ceremony in their backyard!
We were a little 'overdressed' for this wedding but we hope we gave it a 'classy' feel even though it was a casual affair.
They also celebrated their birthdays: 55 for Michael and 50 for Angela. (You would never have guessed their ages right?)

After giving them our well wishes, we were off to Henry & Josephine's wedding banquet.  It was a very FULL day of celebrating!

An Ow Got Hitched!

My cousin Henry got married!
Henry is to the far right. He is one of my baby cousins.
We met his girlfriend, Josephine, in August 2013. A very lovely girl! I gave her a quick run down on our crazy family.
But she didn't get scared away! YAY! And they got engaged in December and married this July!
The ceremony was beautiful and honoring to God.
 Henry's side of the family
I am thrilled to welcome Josephine into our big crazy family!
I know that my Uncle David (his dad) would have been very proud of his son today!
Their Han and Leia cake topper! Love it!
And yes they knew about the Rage.. they had a photo booth also but it was a self-service photo booth. Still so much fun. It takes 4 consecutive pictures and immediately prints out 2 hard copy strips for you to take home.
We were lucky and caught the happy couple to take a picture before they headed into the reception area.
The kids got to get all dressed up..
Emily & Hannah with cousins, Joshua and Zachary
...and cousins, Lauren and Jordan
Uncle Gow Gow with Mandy
Congratulations to Henry and Josephine! We are so happy for you both!

The New Rage

I have not been to a wedding in a very long time. It's probably because most of my friends are married already. So it's a very pleasant surprise when we do get an invitation.
Of course, the down side is that we are now considered the 'old' ones at the weddings. Not invited by the bride nor groom but the parents of the groom. The groom is our church friend's son.
The happy couple, Dave and Mel
Yes, that is what I call.. us stepping into a new generation of weddings. Our friends' kids are getting married! Sigh... And weddings have sure changed since I got married! This one was a gorgeous one at a winery. All the decor matched outdoors and indoors. It was quite beautiful. But very short and sweet. None of those one hour ceremonies that we used to attend.
This dinner was family style and American food... a FIRST for me!
Thankfully there were a few other 'older' couples that we kept company with.
Me and my BFF Helen (yes us old folk can have BFFs)
My hubby and me (our 19th year of marriage this year.. next year is the big 2-0!)
Helen with her hubby Scott (celebrating 21 years of marriage!)
The Parks, Lisa and Jay (celebrating 26 years of marriage!)
The Yees, Michael and Angela (who celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this year)
And my boss, Stephanie and my optometrist,  Gary Louie (celebrating 33 years of marriage!)
Now as entertainment, they had a professional photo booth! Photo Booths are the rage!
They had a photographer there to take your picture and a huge table filled with props and a hat rack filled with hats etc..
After they take the picture, they immediately print a 4x6 of it for you to take home!
It was great fun! One of the most memorable! Congratulations to Mel & Dave!

We aren't that 'old' are we?

THE Dinner

Stacy said it was going to be a 'dinner'. Dinner can be take-out. Dinner can be hamburgers and fries or BBQ. Dinner can even be prime rib and mashed potatoes. This 'dinner' was not just a 'dinner'.

This was the second Kirin restaurant we feasted on during this trip. This particular one was located outside of Vancouver central and was a part of a casino.
The 'dinner' table setting. It's one of the rare times that no dishes were family style and no lazy-suzy was in the middle of the table.
The California family members with the bride and groom and her parents.
The honored bride and groom who have been together for as long as I've known them... 15 years?
Matthew's dad with his younger siblings, Pat and Eugenia. The youngest sibling is always the goofiest... still true here!
Sherman was the emcee and mixed business with pleasure. Feel free to give him a call if you're looking to buy a  place in Vancouver! He'll be happy to help you. Let him know you read that on my blog and I referred you. Maybe he'll give me a cut on his commission!
Matthew's dad gave a short blessing... and No the signup sheets were for the benefit of the emcee, not my father-in-law. But he did think Sherman was funny.
Let's dive into the important part... the food!
Kirin Special Platter with Roasted Suckling Pig: pickled cucumber, jellyfish, tofu, chasu (BBQ pork)
Deep Fried Crab Claw Wrapped with Minced Prawn (it was huge! See how big it was on that little plate?)
Braised Shark Fin & Crab Meat Soup... Yes this was soooooo delicious! And it's not illegal in Canada!
Hannah slurped up hers...
Braised Whole Wild Catch California Mexico Brand Abalone & Braised Pea Tips in Oyster Sauce (super exotic and delicious!)
Crispy Skin Chicken
Live Rock Cod Blanched with Congee
Stewed E-Fu Noodle with tender scallion in abalone sauce
Homemade Fresh Mango Mochi
Wedding Cake Pops... they were so delicious but we could not eat another bite... so I took them home... yep on the plane and everything... waste not want not.
Delicious coconut and lotus seed sesame balls
NOT PICTURED: Love Nest Fried Rice and Sweet Red Bean Soup

This restaurant had THE best service ever! The servers brought out the dish to show us before taking it in the back to divee up to each guest. We got a new plate at every dish and the old one was taken away immediately. Our glasses were always kept filled... with either water, diet coke or wine. I even accidentally dropped a chopstick and a server picked it up before it even hit the ground and gave me a new one. Like he just knew that I was going to drop it.

Of course, I did not realize that the owner of the restaurant was also a guest at this dinner. Apparently, 5-Sook knows everyone that is important! Bottom line, he's a good person to know and have on your side let's say! I am very lucky to be related to him!

All Grown Up

Throughout life, we meet a lot of people. A LOT A LOT of people!! So many that sometimes when I bump into someone I haven't seen in a long time, I don't remember their name nor where I know them from. Was it from school? which school? old church? new church? old work? new work? a friends' friend? at a party?  conference? on vacation?

You get the picture?

Sometimes it's little people. No.. not that kind of people. Kids... Babies... Children. They grow up and I don't recognize them anymore. My only memory of them is when they were 5 and now they are 25. They don't go by JonJon, Ali, NicNic or Chellie-Bellie anymore. It's Jonathan, Alison, Dominic or Michelle. They are adults... attending college... driving... dating... and even getting married.

Oh but I am getting ahead of myself. I should start at the beginning.

My first experience with children (other than being one myself) was teaching Sunday school at my old church, CIBC O. I remember trying to figure out where would I best help out in the church. I didn't want to do nursery (carrying them for an hour while they were crying for their mom to come back did not sound like something I wanted to 'serve' in); toddlers were still too little and I didn't want to do the 'diaper-thing'; but preschool was do-able. Four and five-year-olds seemed more independent, self-sufficient and self-entertained than all those other younger ages. (Little did I know that elementary aged kids are even better.)

I started helping out in the Children's Church (ages 4-5). It was here that I first met Crystal. She was very outspoken and obedient young lady of four years and always had a huge smile on her face. Her brother Jonathan (Jon Jon) was only a few years younger than her and was super smart.. now I mean .. SUPER smart... I think he even skipped a grade and he played the piano like it was a part of him.

A few years later, Crystal and Jon Jon's family helped start CI's church plant in my current home town. My boyfriend, at the time (and now husband) and I soon followed to help start and build this little family oriented church. It was an incredible time of building wonderful relationships with some incredible families all of whom are still near and dear to us today. I continued teaching Sunday School, this time 2nd/3rd grade, and Crystal was in my class again and JonJon soon followed. It was teaching Sunday School that I decided to change careers and go into teaching full time.

Fast forward many many years later. Crystal went to UCD for her undergrad and became involved in a Christian Fellowship called InterVarsity. Her heart was drawn to teaching college students about God and even though she taught high school for a little bit, God was leading her to do something different. She became a campus minister back at her alma mater and that is where she is today.

But not alone.. you see.. she just got married to Michael (another IV staff worker but not from UCD... but all the way across the country in Detroit.)

Jonathan graduated from UCLA with his undergraduate degree and is now at Berklee College of Music pursuing his passion and dream in music.
I came out of retirement and had the privilege of coordinating Crystal and Michael's wedding ceremony. My husband was even an extra photographer for them (which I was thankful for since these pictures on this post are his).
It was a honor also to stand with Crystal's parents, Alan & Angelina, dear dear friends of ours during this precious time in their daughter's life.

Nowadays, weddings are an 'event-filled' and event-planned' affair meaning that the bride and groom hire professional wedding planners and decorators to plan every aspect of their wedding from the engagement portraits, invitations, table settings, to photo booths and cupcakes and favors all coordinated and tied together seamlessly to a specific theme. It's gorgeous but very expensive!

Crystal and Michael's wedding was one of the simplest yet beautiful weddings I have ever attended. They made God the center of their wedding and honored their guests and family throughout the wedding and reception.

Nearing the end of the ceremony, their officiant Brian (who did an awesome job.. you would have never known that this was the first wedding he officiated), the bridal party and their guests all laid hands on the new couple to pray a prayer of blessing upon their new life together. What an honor and blessing to God!

Now getting back to Kids turning into Adults. Crystal and Jonathan. I've only known them as kids. I didn't know at that time many years ago what or how they will grow into adulthood and what they will do with their lives. Or what kind of decisions they would make for themselves. You just don't know. I didn't know. I was just a Sunday School teacher to them. Just a tiny part of their precious life. And to see them at this wedding... it brought tears to my eyes.

I am so proud of the adults Crystal and Jonathan have become.

A Very Special Wedding

Yes, another wedding but I did not coordinate nor plan it. I just made the fluffy punch. :)

This was a very special wedding for a very special person in my life: my dear friend Jan waited 51 years to marry the man of her dreams. She met him when she was 12 and he was 16. They became an 'item' for one year but separated when Jan's family moved across town. Both married other people and had families.

Fast forward 51 years. Jan decided to use Facebook to reconnect with old friends. She reconnected to Tony, who was divorced, and they renewed their friendship and eventually decided that there should be no more lost time spent between them.

For the 10+ years that I have known and loved Jan, I so desired her to be loved and cared for since she loves and gives so much to others. It gives me so much joy to see how happy Jan is today.

So never say never when you want true love! God will provide in His time.
This is a picture of them when they were together the first time around.
The little girl in between them is Jan's great-granddaughter who was the flowergirl.
Jan was so beautiful; this was her going away dress handmade by a dear friend of hers
