And She's Off.. Part Deux!

My Baby is a Middle Schooler!
Hannah starts 6th grade today!
Hannah with her friends Katelyn and Michelle.
Hannah with Katelyn in Kindergarten .. seven years ago.
And there are many changes...
- She starts school 15 minutes earlier than before.
- She'll have a locker.
- She'll have 3-4 teachers (depending on her elective).
- She'll change clothes for PE.
- She'll have an iPad to use for the year.
- She won't have her big sis on campus anymore. :(

But on the upside, Mama will be teaching Yearbook again at the school.

We appreciate your prayers through this process of change for Hannah and that her anxiety won't increase but instead she will gain confidence through the unfamiliar. My prayer 'word' for Hannah through this year is CONFIDENCE. I pray that she will gain confidence in all she does through Christ Jesus.
Emily has officially completed her first week of high school! It's not what she is used to but she is trying to get the hang of everything. My friends say it can take up to six months to a year to transition from private school to public high school. My daughter sees things very black and white so this new season of her life can be very gray-ish. My prayer 'word' for Emily this year is COMPASSION. I pray that she will have compassion for everyone and everything that she encounters that is different from what she is used to and familiar with.

And She's Off!

We are taking a break from our regular posting to give you this announcement...

First Day of High School!
She's a Husky now!
It was just yesterday she was starting kindergarten..

And then middle school...

6th grade for Emily; 3rd for Hannah

Two years ago she dreaded this...

Just got her braces on! OUCH!
because of this...
Before with all her crooked teeth..
but now she's all smiles...
Ready to get those darn things off finally!
because of this!
Braces off right before school starts! Perfect timing!
Public high school will be an adjustment.. 11 years at a small Christian private school is all she's known. We are so thankful her childhood friend, Rachel, will be in 5 of her 6 classes. Pretty fortuitous since there are around 500 freshman at the school.
Rachel & Emily at their lockers
It's so tiny.. full with books already.
Two schools for pick up and drop off for the first time! UGH! Hannah will be starting middle school.. next week. Yes she is still on summer vacation. "Lucky poo," her sister says.

With Deep Respect

Arlington is home of the United States military cemetery:
These 624 acres have interred those from as far back as the American Civil War.
The cemetery was built during the Civil War on the land of Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his wife, Mary Anna, who was Martha Washington's great granddaughter. When the Civil War broke out General Lee did not want to be on enemy territory so he abandoned his estate even though he still owned it. When the war ended, the Union buried many of their dead there so he did not return. It is estimated that the cemetery will be full in the year 2060. Any honorable member who served in the armed forces may be buried here along with their spouse and minor children.
Significant burials: John F Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy Onassis with eternal flame; While looking at the view of the city, JFK told his brother that he could live here forever, so Robert decided to bury him here.
Robert Kennedy is also buried here with a simple white cross and tombstone.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier stands on top of a hill overlooking DC.
Honor guards have guarded it 24/7 since July 2, 1937.
There is a meticulous routine for the Tomb Guards (change of guard at every hour)
1. Marches 21 steps down the black mat behind the Tomb.
2. Turns, faces east for 21 seconds.
3. Turns and faces north for 21 seconds.
4. Takes 21 steps down the mat.
5. Repeats the routine until the soldier is relieved of duty at the Changing of the Guard.
After each turn, the Guard executes a sharp "shoulder-arms" movement to place the weapon on the shoulder closest to the visitors to signify that the Guard stands between the Tomb and any possible threat.
Twenty-one was chosen because it symbolizes the highest military honor that can be bestowed the 21-gun salute.
Each turn the guard makes precise movements followed by a loud click of the heels as he snaps them together. The guard is changed every half hour during daylight in the summer, and every hour during daylight in the winter, and every two hours at night (when the cemetery is closed to the public), regardless of weather conditions.
Emily's class had the privilege of representing their school by laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Her classmates, Anissa and Adrianne were chosen to represent KHA and participated in the wreath laying ceremony.
It was a humbling and honoring ceremony.

Three Great Firsts

Since I am such a history buff,  I've trained my girls to love museums (summer field trips!). So naturally, Emily's 8th grade Washington DC/New York trip was filled with tons of fascinating information. To experience history unravel in front of your eyes, it was very awe inspiring. I could go on and on on what I loved but I'll just give you some tidbits that stuck out to me:

Williamsburg, Virginia
Williamsburg is the capital of Virginia, England's first capital in the New World. We walked through the revolutionary city of which 88 of the buildings are original to the Revolutionary (1770s) period. We entered into a prison cell called the Goal (Jail) where Blackbeard's pirates were locked in and hung to death after their trials.
This is the 'goal' where they would pack in over 50 persons who were awaiting trial for crimes ranging from not paying their debts to murder. Notice the accommodations: stifling hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. The box in the back was the water closet.

This beautiful field held sheep for the town and the public gallows for hangings.
Since Williamsburg was known as a merchant town they made a lot of things including bricks.
They used their hands and feet to mold them! It was very mushy and gooey.
Jamestown, Virginia
Jamestown was where the first English colonists arrived and was the first permanent English settlement. It was a 4-1/2 month voyage for the colonists.
The ships first landed on this piece of land jutting out of the waters.
The 3 ships that arrived were not very large.
When they arrived the land was not uninhabited.  A Native American tribe called the Powhatans lived there. At a life sized model of a Powhatan Indian village, we saw how they lived within their community outside of the Jamestown settlement. And Yes, Pocahontas was a real person. She was the daughter of the Powhatan chief and she saved John Smith's life. But she did not marry him.
George Washington
Mount Vernon in Virginia is George Washington's personal home on the Potomac River. The mansion has 21 rooms and still has the original paint colors and furniture; even the bed that President Washington died in.
We visited the Slave Memorial and Burial Ground; his will stipulated that after his death, his 100 slaves must be set free.

This is the memorial to all his slaves which were buried in the land surrounding this memorial.
His Tomb: his will directed that he be buried on his estate along with his wife

There is a place on Capitol Hill that is dedicated for Washington's body to be lain as a memorial to our first President. Congress continued to ask for his body to be moved there.
But Washington strictly stipulated that his body remain at his personal residence with his wife.
So after numerous years of asking, Congress stopped asking anymore.
His Will: George had accumulated a lot of land and property and his #1 priority was to provide for his dearly beloved wife Martha and his family members. He also let go of debts owed by his brother and his brother's children. George and Martha did not have any children of their own. Martha had two from a previous marriage whom he took in as his own. The second part of his request was to the emancipation, care and education of his slaves. He was not only a military commander, our nation's first president, but also a farmer. He had a pioneer farm on his property along with a gristmill (for flour and cornmeal) and distillery (to make rye whiskey and other products).

I will conclude this post with this: George Washington was an amazing man: highly intelligent, a courageous and dedicated soldier; a loving husband and family man, and a follower of God. He led America's fight for independence from Britain and after winning the Revolutionary War, he resigned his position as General so he could be home with his wife. But he left to be a part of the Constitutional Convention to help write the Declaration of Independence, thus becoming one of the Founding Fathers of our nation. Soon after, the thirteen colonies knew they needed one person to lead the Americas and Washington was the unanimous choice for the job. And again he left to serve his country. He was away from his home and his wife for 21 years. George Washington had no presidential example; there was no other president to learn from. He was the first President of the United States of America. He had set his own precedent on what to do and how to do it. And he did an amazing job. Thanks be to God.

Puppy Heaven

Our friends, Laura and Amos, are caring for Gilda IV, a Labrador/Golden Retriever. Gilda is a female breeder for the non profit assistance dog organization Canine Companions for Independence. She is almost 3 years old and is on her second litter of pups. We were privileged to be able to see her current 9 puppies before they are delivered to their respective organizations.
All the puppies looked alike with only two that had slightly darker fur. We were most worried about Atlas IV (red collar) who was the first born and the tiniest of the nine and didn't move very much when he was born. All the pups were 5 weeks old when we saw them.
Little Atlas is not so little anymore.
No worries. He is doing just fine. Still small but small is not bad.
This one is one of the bigger ones.. have no idea who s(he) is since I can't see the color collar.
This is Amos; he has pinkish lips.
Anatoli was a flirty one.

This one is Amos
This is Atlas.
That face!
I totally can not tell them apart!

Our friends had a 24/7 live cam up the whole time and it was awesome to see the pups start to open their eyes; to running around and playing together. Most of the time they just napped and slept and pooed. Their human Mom Laura was a saint in cleaning up after them regularly, wiping down their area and potty training them and picking up their messes. She was incredible! This was Laura's 2nd litter she delivered. Three more to go!

In A Galaxy Far Far Away

My nephew Timothy turned 6 this year.
He had a Star Wars themed party... with the expected SW cake, favor bags and pretend light sabers.
Everything was going so well when some unexpected guests arrived and a FIGHT ensued...
Apparently Han Solo and Darth Vader wanted to go at it..
But the kids did good.. they had everything under control!
Poor Darth Vader.. He had no chance!
The girls were not swayed by Darth Vader's power!
And Timothy was a great Jedi Knight!
Look for these men in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens..
